"It is vital for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals to recognize our movement as basically a transgender movement. … The fact that the most effeminate gay men and the butchest lesbians are the most endangered among us should alert us to the fact that society cares less about what we do in private than it cares about a challenge to its longstanding gender assumptions."

Please reblog: We the people petition the Obama administration to RECOGNIZE NON-BINARY GENDERS →

This petition is a HUGE DEAL. At the very least, if this petition gets enough signatures to require a response, it will make the news and cause a long-overdue mainstream discussion of the fact that the gender binary does not fit everyone. Please consider signing, even though it’s a bit of a pain to create a White House account.

“Legal documents in the United States only recognize “male” and “female” as genders, leaving anyone who does not identify as one of these two genders with no option. Australia and New Zealand both allow an X in place of an M or an F on passports for this purpose, and the UK recognizes ‘Mx’ (pronounced “Mix”) as a gender-neutral title.

This petition asks the Obama administration to legally recognize genders outside of the male-female binary, and provide an option for these genders on all legal documents and records.

A call out to trans* immigrants (please repost/forward)

The resource guide Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is looking for contributors to its chapter on intersections of immigrant and transgender identities. Please post this call for submissions to any community bulletin boards or listservs you find relevant. Thank you!
——————————————————————————————————-

Are you an immigrant or refugee, or do you come from a family of recent immigrants? Do you identify as transgender, or express your gender differently than is expected in your culture?

The upcoming book Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is looking for contributors to its chapter on intersections of transgender / immigrant identities. We are interested to hear about your experiences with gender in your culture and as an immigrant. If you would like to share your story, please email it to kate@transbodies.com by February 11th, or mail to Laura Erickson-Schroth, 564 First Avenue, 14D, NY NY 10016. (Email is preferred if you have access). If you are more comfortable with an interview rather than a written piece, you can email kate@transbodies.com to see if someone is available in your area to interview you, or to arrange a phone or Skype interview.

We are looking for pieces 300-800 words in length. Please focus on whatever you feel is most important, but a few topics you may wish to address include:

-          your experiences with gender-related expectations across your different cultures

-          how/if being trans* affected your immigration process or your experience in the immigrant community

-          how/if being an immigrant affected your understanding of your gender identity

-          any resources you found particularly helpful

Please also include the name you would like to use (pseudonyms are fine) and your age. If you feel comfortable, also include a photo that can be used in the book, where you are from originally and where you live today. (Example: Chad, 37. Originally from Burma, now living in Arizona, USA.)

The book will be in English, but if you strongly prefer to write in your native language, we will do everything we can to translate for you. If your story is chosen to be included, we will email you the text we plan on using so you have the chance to approve it.

Trans Bodies, Trans Selves is a resource guide for the transgender population, covering health, legal issues, cultural and social questions, history, theory, and more. It is a place for transgender and gender-questioning people, their partners and families, students, professors, guidance counselors, and others to look for up-to-date information on transgender life. For more information, visit www.transbodies.com or email kate@transbodies.com or amanda@transbodies.com with any questions or comments.

I’m not even going to talk about that anti-gay thing going on in Russia. Because it’s the same anti-gay thing that’s always going on. And because I’m sad. And because it’s getting more and more official and it’s gross. And because I’m tired.

But you can read about it, if you’d like. I’ll just go back to being sad. For now.

(In front of the Duma in Moscow.)

Also, this picture. It makes something shiver inside me, like the last breath you take before tears start rolling down your face, or maybe like when you sit your frozen body down in front of a fire. Not sure which.
